Our vision for 3D printing

3D printing is well established for modeling and prototyping. While some may say the market is saturated, we contend that with much higher levels of productivity, quality and improved economics will result in a much broader adoption. Ultimately we expect this will impact the processes of innovation.

This is important because we see a future where the rules of who wins and who loses in the market are going to change. Waves of technology disruption play through at an ever increasing rate, and many of these are democratizing “level the playing field” impacts. Over time we believe it will be less about barriers to entry for the factors of production, and more about winning on the virtues of the product itself. Therefore, the process of innovation will be paramount.

In the nearer term, we see that HP Multi Jet Fusion™ technology has the potential to dramatically accelerate the product development cycle – it could even be used to rapidly iterate, enabling fast feedback from consumers such that hardware product development can mimic software “agile” development processes.

In the longer term, our vision for the HP Multi Jet Fusion™ platform is that it will be a key ingredient to industrial transformation – fundamentally changing the where, the how and the why things are produced.

What do you think of our vision and how do you believe you could contribute?

The biggest inhibitor to the growth of our industry is the capability of the current set of 3D Printing technologies. Whether you spend $1000 or $1m on a machine, the results are mixed and each technology has weaknesses which ultimately mean customers and service providers are required to compromise. HP are introducing a technology which we hope will mean we no longer have to compromise; colour, fast turnaround, great material properties, commercialy viable prices and an open extensible platform is a gamechanger. If HP are able to deliver on their promise, then that will make us and our customers very happy and enable us to grow the industry 10 times, 100 times or more!

@3DPS, thanks for your comment! The inhibitors to 3D usage you mention – speed, quality, cost and reliability – are the exact barriers we plan to address as we develop HP Multi Jet Fusion technology in the months and years to come. This industry has huge potential and we appreciate your support as we work to bring that vision to life and reinvent how industries design and manufacture.
