3D Printing Growth Depends on an Open Platform for Materials

When HP’s President of 3D Printing, Stephen Nigro, unveiled the HP Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solution at RAPID 2016, he predicted the HP Multi Jet Fusion Open Platform would prove to one of the most important components of our new technology. Here’s why it’s such a critical innovation for the industry:


To realize the potential of 3D printing as a fully-fledged production technology, manufacturers will need access to a wide range of materials with enhanced properties for specialized applications. The industry needs rapid materials innovation to drive performance improvements and identify new possibilities for part properties. At the same time, the economics need to make sense — and that means driving materials costs down, to position 3D printing as a viable alternative to traditional production methods.



We believe a collaborative approach is essential for meeting these challenges and growing the 3D printing industry. By providing an Open Platform and partnering with innovative industry leaders, we can bring the best minds and resources to introducing new materials and lowering costs.



An Open Ecosystem

To realize this vision, we’re creating a platform that will offer 3D printing materials from partners and third parties, alongside HP materials. Vendors will set the price and value proposition, and we’ll certify materials for safety and reliability.


Today, we’re working closely with certified partners to develop materials. In the future, we plan to expand into an open ecosystem, providing a development kit so that vendors can create materials independently.

Materials Today and Tomorrow

Today, our 3D printing technology uses HP 3D High Reusability PA12, a strong, multi-purpose thermoplastic that helps optimize cost and part quality, thanks to industry-leading reusability*. In the future, we’ll introduce a wider family of thermoplastics, including PA11, PA12 glass beads and materials with flame retardant properties, as well as elastomers.
