Photos: HP’s Win 8 Launch Party

How would you celebrate the launch of a new operating system? Well, if you’ve got a ton of awesome new products to show off to people, you throw a party. This week, in New York City at Terminal 5, HP threw a big ol’ jam around “The Sound of Touch.” With all the growing excitement for Windows 8, we  wanted to show off why we were excited. Want to see a life-sized laptop, Hip-Hop Group The Far East Movement….and a gang of new HP products….? Keep reading.

Foam: Why Is It Inside Your Ink Cartridge?

For most people printer ink isn’t exactly dinner conversation, that is, until you come to my house. As HP’s resident Inkologist, I do my best to share the cool and complex work that goes into developing each HP ink formulation. Now, I certainly could go on and on with the formulas, bits and bytes of ink cartridge technology (it’s very interesting I assure you!), but today we’re going to take a look at the all important, and perhaps underappreciated, role of the cartridge foam.

The new ENVY Ultrabook (and What’s a Sleekbook?)

If the Spectre and SpectreXT were some super-premium, extreme high-end Ferrari flavors of the Ultrabook, then that’d make the ENVY line the BMW…Slick in its own ways and still in a different class from what else you’ll see amongst Ultrabook devices. And then there’s the Sleekbook.  Aside from Marketingese, I was curious – what does all this even mean? Well, let’s get down to it as we take a quick look at these latest lightweight laptops: The ENVY 4 and ENVY 6The ENVY 4 and ENVY 6.

Do you ENVY Your PC?

We all do odd things with our PCs sometimes. Use it in a strange place, maybe -- I dunno. Get creative and Photoshop up some pictures? A little later today, we're going to start rolling out the new Facebook timeline for HP and we want your help. We want you to get creative and show off some of the pictures that you've taken. A Quick Look at HP ENVY 14 Spectre

We revealed the ENVY 14 Spectre in January – and it won Best of CES 2012 for its awesome design. And tomorrow, you’ll be able to order a Spectre if you’re on the market for a premium ultrabook that stands out in a crowd. Truth be told, these laptops are a little in demand at that moment – but that ain’t stopping me. I was able to grab a prototype unit for an hour or two. So, of course, I decided to take it for a spin around town. Read on for a couple bits from my short, sweet test drive.

Photoblog: HP Sees the Stars at Sundance

Every year around this time, the film industry descends on Park City, Utah for the Sundance Film Festival. New indie films are showcased, celebrities are everywhere….and HP is on-hand to show off some of its newest gear – like the HP ENVY 14 Spectre. Want to see what Elijah Wood, William H. Macy and others are checking out?

HP @ CES: A Photoblog

The annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is kind of a nerdy mess. THOUSANDS of people swarm in to show off the tech trends for the new year. It’s a lot of sights and sounds to absorb if you're not ready for it. Well, there are parts of it that the press gets up-close-and-personal in a much more manageable ballroom - as opposed to running all around Vegas. Well, I wanted to share a couple pictures that I took during the Digital Experience and Showstoppers events that HP demoed over the past few nights. Then, I wanted to share a couple other things that we did during the show. But, really, CES 2012 was all about the ENVY 14 Spectre.

Spectre is Coming

Last year, as we announced the latest line of ENVY laptops and TouchSmart desktops, some….thing was lurking.Spectre. Rumors have been floating around the Web. A couple sites like Engadget and Mashable have already taken a moment to scrutinize the following video, but what the heck is Spectre?

Over the past few months, HP has attempted to give you a bit of everything: A swath of new ENVYs, brought Beats Audio into even more machines and introduced HP’s first-ever ready-for-business Ultrabook. Obviously, we’re in holiday shopping season, so we hit you with a Black Friday Cheat Sheet to save you time navigating the mess of lines and hysteria following the Thanksgiving holiday.

Quick Read: How HP Designs Laptops

I like it when journalists take the time to ask the "why" and "how" behind laptop design. Laptopmag's Michael A. Prospero recently did just that and I wanted to share a couple neat bits here. Read on for a couple insights from HP's director of notebook design, Stacy Wolff. (And, of course, I have to throw in my two cents as well.)

HP Papercraft

When I was a little kid, at home sick, my mom would yank out a book of paper models she had lying around. From there, I’d go to town punching out shapes, inserting tab “A” into slot “B” and building my own paper empires. All these memories came flooding back as I recently played with the HP Envy100 e-All-in-One-Printer. Want to learn more about papercraft and how to get the most out of it on your printer – and see some great, nerdy starter projects? Keep reading.

Ask the Nerd: Notebook Gaming Tips

My name is Darren and I'm a nerd. And I also happen to be a bit of a gamer. And by a bit I mean way more than my wife would like. For years, I always looked for ways to sneak in a game or two. Whether we’re talking notebooks, netbooks, smartphones….well, you get the idea. It just so happens that this week, we got a question that is near and dear to my nerdly heart. Someone who bought an HP G62-143cl (PCMag.com reviewed it a couple months back.) desperately wants to get his game on. Well, let’s hook him up! Here’s the question, in a nutshell: I tried playing a game on the laptop and it lags. I asked different people about installing a new video card on my laptop and said its better not to because it might be too expensive. But now I’m looking for games that I can play on it. What games would you recommend?

3D Mark 11 – The Next Generation…

3dmark Call it nostalgia, but Futuremark’s recent announcement of 3D Mark 11 benchmarking software really took me back. It evoked memories of playing EA’s Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (a classic first person shooter) on my then-cutting edge gaming rig. This was in 2002. Ancient by today’s standards, I had the baddest rig on the block back in the day. We're talking Intel Pentium 4 Extreme CPU, the Intel D875PBZ “Bonanza” motherboard, 1GB of DDR system memory, ATI 9800 Pro 128mb AGP Graphics card, RAIDed 120GB IDE hard drives, Pioneer DVDRW optical drives, a gigabit NIC, Windows XP Pro and 19" LCD monitors.

HP Envy 14 and 17: Big Changes for Less

HPEnvy Think of HP's Envy notebook line like a Formula1 car – they serve as test beds for new technologies. And the latest racers out the gate are the new 14 and 17 Envy laptops. Stacy Wolff, Director of Notebook Product Design and Notebook Global Business Unity for HP's Personal Systems Group, spent a few minutes telling me about what his team learned from developing the Envy 13 and 15 and some of the features going into the new machines According to Stacy, "The Envy is meant to deliver a premium experience. It should feel like you're holding something substantial in your hands." Stacy says that they are also listening to what people have to say.
