VIdeo Tests: The ENVY 15 In Action

by GizmoGladstone January - last edited January

If you've been curious about how the ENVY 15 performs, you might’ve seen some reviews. Or maybe you wanted to eyeball how the Radeon HD 7690M graphics perform in these laptops. I’m gonna be honest: I haven’t had the chance to lay hands upon a final unit since they came out in December. HOWEVER, I’ve found a video rundown over at mobiletechreviews.com that shows what kind of performance to expect in games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and FEAR 2. Curious to learn more? I thought so. Keep reading…

So I was reading Lisa Gade’s write-up of the ENVY 15 and she gives a lot of great context in her review….and score one for knowing the deal: She gives a nod to the original ENVY 15. (I was actually a big fan of that one back when it came out.) I’m not going to try and sum up that entire story here. Go on, read her thoughts. Or you could watch the videos that are embedded over there. The one I promised is a no-smoke, no-mirrors video (how I prefer to roll) showing real gameplay footage from the above-mentioned titles. It’s a little on the long side – almost 10 minutes – but the batting order goes like this: CoD: Modern Warfare 3 at the start; Skyrim starts at around 3:19; FEAR 2 begins around the 7-minute mark.

But, here’s something I spotted toward the end of Lisa’s write-up: “[The ENVY 15] is a high performance yet portable laptop that's clad in metal and has all the creature comforts you'd expect from a higher end laptop. We like the dual HDMI and DisplayPort with the ability to drive multiple monitors, strong dedicated graphics, backlit keyboard and a full HD 1080p IPS display. Though I purchased the Envy for review purposes, I've decided to keep it as my main Windows machine. It's a fast and capable gamer and Photoshop machine.”

Nice! Another believer.

Hey giz any thoughts about all the manufacturing defects (red orange calibration issue, dented USB ports, keyboard flex etc) I'm curious if you know what HPs plan of action is for us. Case you haven't heard here's some relevant links from the media: http://www.theverge.com/2012/1/24/2728328/hp-envy-15-orange-red-radiance-display http://www.mobiletechreview.com/notebooks/HP-Envy-15-2012.htm http://www.pcworld.com/article/248768/hp_envy_15_review_a_great_laptop_marred_by_serious_flaws.html

Hey Stevester,

Good to hear from you! Appreciate the links -- and yep, we've been following the developments. Like I said in the notebookreviews.com forums, I've passed along findings to "top men" (and women). We are looking into this....and the second I can let everyone know something, we're gonna post it here. Promise!

(I'll, of course, also let the forum gang know as well when I hear.)

Hi all,

Questions have been out there about the IPS screen on the ENVY 15. I just got an official update and wanted to share it with you. Here is the latest:

“HP understands that some customers have expressed concern regarding the appearance of the color red in the ENVY 15 full High Definition (HD) panel, and we wanted to reassure our customers that this panel is functioning properly.

HP ENVY Series notebooks use optional premium LED-backlit display panels that have a higher color gamut (range of viewable colors), brightness and viewing angles than many display panels.  This means that some colors may appear differently than they do on other displays.

We understand that customers may have their own preferences on color settings, so in response to customer feedback, in the coming weeks we expect to offer an optional software utility that customers can download if they would like to adjust their default color settings to suit their needs.

For customers who need an even higher color gamut and color tuning for professional grade applications for example, certain HP notebook models and standalone displays offer DreamColor technology.”

As always, when I hear more, I’ll update you.

I was told by a HP tech support rep, as was another gentleman on another forum, that HP will be recalling the affected Envy 15's with the technical inability to properly display the color red. There has yet to be an official announcement on this however. Are you able to verify this?
