“Make it Work!” – Those are Tim Gunn’s famous motivational words, echoing through the design halls on Lifetime’s Project Runway. In case you’re not familiar with this reality TV show this is how it goes: A bunch of ambitious new designers compete for top honors, cash prizes and a runway show during fashion week in NYC. On the show, they use TouchSmart PCs – and that got some bloggers thinking: “Hey, I think I can do some of these challenges….” And so they are.
A few industrious members of the blogosphere got hooked up with TouchSmart 610 PCs for a little test – to see if they could recreate some of the Project Runway challenges at home. I wanted to share some of what’s been happening…
Over at Design Milk, I was following Jaime’s progress in The HP Project Runway Challenge. During week one, we got this pretty sassy take on Judy Jetson created with a bedsheet and pajamas. Honestly, I was a little impressed by this one…. I can’t even draw a straight line with a ruler (and Darren can barely manage more than stick figures). Week two got us high fashion from….a pet store? Jaime thought dog beds and leashes would do the trick. Love it!
Susan over at Freshly Picked ran into an interesting dilemma for the PJ challenge – considering what she sleeps in – but she soldiered through with her design.
Kelly Beall over at Design Crush has been pretty diligent about sticking to the show challenges. And she even confessed that she opted for using a stylus for helping draw out her designs….”a stylus from an ancient Palm Pilot,” that is. Go on take a gander at some of her creations. For week one, we got a proper evening gown. Week two – when the show went to the dogs – she came up with this slinky dress I wouldn’t mind seeing someone wear. Then, for last week’s episode, it was an over the (big) top dress design for a stiltwalker.
Creature Comforts’ Ez Pudewa seemed like an overachiever, hitting upon two designs for that first eveningwear challenge. For week two, I was checking out this sweet summery dress that some fashionista would wear while dog-walking (pictured to the right). And the above-mentioned stiltwalking challenge resulted in this flowing dress.
Megan over at Not Martha accepted the challenge as well. Well, I should say that her man, Scott, joined the fray as well. They both watched the show and tackled the challenges with some verve. In the PJ competition, for example, Megan came up with a flowing, colorful dress while Scott put together an outfit with “MC Hammer pants.” MC Hammer for the win!
. Week two, deciding who was best in show was a little easier. But Scott’s design just cracks me up. It looks like Scott and Megan are having a ton of fun with every episode as they competed with each other and I can’t wait to see what happens this week.
Project Runway airs Thursdays at 9pm on Lifetime and I, for one will keep checking back to see what these bloggers think up next!
What do you think of the designs? Let them know here…and continue following them on their blogs to see what else they dream up in the coming weeks!
