A little while back, my man Jon Rayner tore down an Omni 27 to its base components (you can find that here). Somewhere along the way, he mentioned the virtues of VESA Mounting. You know, when you want to mount a modern flatscreen TV, it has four screws holes in the back so that you can screw it into a wall. Well, same goes for our TouchSmart computers. You just need to know where to look. Like in this story.
You see, since then I've noticed a couple questions pop up around the VESA mounting....like on the TouchSmart 420. Where is the VESA mount? How do you get to it? How do you set it up? Well, I looked around and found a quick photo session to walk you through the process on a TouchSmart 420. So, follow along step-by-step....
Let's get the obvious stuff out of the way.
- Turn off the computer and disconnect all cables.
- Transfer the computer to a clean, flat, stable work surface over a noncarpeted floor. HP recommends that you put down a blanket, towel, or other soft cloth to protect the screen from scratches or other damage.
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage your processor, disk drives, expansion boards and other components. HP strongly recommends the use of an antistatic wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the computer. (Me? I make sure to tap grounded items and discharge anything before touching any electronic's guts.)
- Do not remove a component from its protective packaging until you are ready to install it.
- Look both ways before you cross the street
- Floss your teeth every day
- You get the idea
First you need to take the sweet-looking stand off the TouchSmart 420. If you must.
Step 1
To remove the stand, first remove the USB dongle cover, the USB dongle, and the back cover.
For instructions, see the HP support document, Removing and Replacing the Back Cover . |
 |
Step 2
Remove the eight screws that secure the stand to the back of the computer. |
 |
Step 3
Place the computer face down on a table, allowing the stand to hang over the edge of the table. |
 |
Step 4
Slide the stand down, and then pull the stand away from the computer. |

All right, with that out of the way, you're in business.
ALSO: Head over to the HP Shopping page and dig up this VESA mounting kit. I'm told that this should do the trick with the 420.
You now own a It's a VESA-moutable display....so use all precautions that you would with any TV you'd consider mounting somewhere. Like on a stand, in a home entertainment center a swivel mount you anchor into a wall....or just the wall. (I found this guide for wall mounting over at Crutchfield.com...)
But let's say you miss those funky struts and want to set up the TouchSmart 420 back on the stand. You know, for novelty sake. Here's how you put it all back together:
