Real Life Road Test: Folio 13

The Folio13 really is a great little laptop – sorry, ultrabook – when you need to hit the road for work. It’s long battery life more than just a bullet point to put on a press release. In fact, I recently put my money where my mouth is – on the road for CES, I wanted to travel light. Ridiculously light. SO, for a full week, I only used the reasonably svelte Folio13 and nothing else. Heck, I didn’t even bring the charger along with me during the day as I roamed the CES show floor. Want to hear about the results? Read on.

I was a little leery at first. I’m the guy that usually over-packs electronics, planning for every possible problem. So to say that I was only going to bring this ultrabook and little else scared me at first. But my back thanked me later. But I digress.

At the airport, I didn’t worry about questing for an outlet. Just let it ride! Checked my email pre-flight then in-air, started playing back a couple shows that I’d recorded the day before. (I have a USB HD tuner device that ALWAYS travels with me.) Checked in and ready to roll, I drop off everything in the room except for a tiny laptop bag.

One small compu-sack holding the Folio13, my phone and some business cards. That was it. I didn’t have time for a stopwatch to tell me exactly how much time I eked out of the thing, but I can tell you this much: Over any given day during the show, I was co-hosting Google+ Hangouts, wrote several blog posts, kept on top of email…and various backend bloggery-type-tasks. I’d crack it open to quickly bang something out, then slam it shut to dash off to my next appointment. In one case, I found myself in a WiFi dead zone and thanked the digital jeebus that the Folio rocks an Ethernet port (a bit of a rarity among ultrabooks).

If that sounds anything like your business day, then I can give the Folio13 my thumbs up, for whatever that’s worth. By the end of the day (translation 3am) I’d recharge myself….and the ultrabook would still have maybe an hour’s worth of energy in it. More than I could say for myself.

(And, yeah, maybe I'd stream in some Netflix before konking out. The speakers on the laptop are surprisingly loud, but I could always run it through the TV thanks to the built-in HDMI port.)

UPDATE 1/22: Actually, we just started running a funny commercial that nicely sums up the point:

I can only imagine that other road warriors could’ve used a Folio during CES. At least, that’s what I’m thinking after reading Scott Stein’s review of the Folio13 over at CNET. According to him, “When it comes to Windows ultrabooks, the HP Folio 13 is the best of the bunch in terms of performance, price, and ergonomics…” It even snagged a 4 out of 5 rating and an Editor’s Choice nod. So, obviously, I’m not completely nuts for going charger-free on this trip.

Have any crazy work stories where you could’ve used a smaller, more nimble laptop? I’d love to hear em….and maybe interview you for a longer piece I’m working on! here if you want to learn more about HP laptops.

Totally agree---the Folio 13 is great. Without a doubt, the best computer I've ever owned.
