NVIDIA (& HP SlateBook x2) at PAX Prime 2013

Right now, the largest collection of nerds (outside of the Microsoft campus) descends upon the Seattle area for PAX Prime. It’s a HUGE show where game-makers hang out with gamers for the Labor Day weekend, geeking out and getting tastes of the latest stuff coming out this fall. Our pals from NVIDIA will be there in GeForce (pun!) to promote graphics cards…and Tegra 4. In fact, if you get on over to their booth you’ll be able to play around with the SlateBook x2.

slatebook x2 PAX.jpgIn case you’ve missed everything. else I’ve written. on the blog. about the SlateBook x2. here’s what you need to know….

As far as tablets go, the SlateBook x2 offers the best way to play Tegra 4-based Android games (in my humble opinion). Why do I say this? Well, for $479 this guy is not only a tiny-but-super-capable Android tablet, it offers a boatload of features you’re not going to find in other Android tabs:

  • Under the hood: Nvidia’s Tegra 4 processor
  • OS: It runs Android Jellybean (I’ve been tinkering with a 4.2.2 build in my test unit)
  • It’s got a 10-inch 1920 by 1200 pixel IPS screen.
  • Internal memory: 16GB
  • There’s a keyboard base (which also has USB slots)
  • There’s a second battery in the base which charges the tablet so you get 2x the battery life!
  • External storage: Micro SD card slot in the tablet portion, SD card slot in the keyboard base
  • Measurements: It’s 20.3mm thin (9.9mm for the slate) and weighs 2.98 pounds (1.44 pounds for the slate)
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • HDMI 1.4

I’ve tested out a bunch of games (and continue to test out games on it in the name of work). In fact, NVIDIA’s Jordan Dodge and I put our heads together and came up with a hit list of some of the best games to play on it. [My list of Awesome Android Games]

A quick sidenote: The Slate 21 – Our 21-inch, Tegra 4-fueled all-in-one desktop – is equally awesome with games. Unfortunately, we don’t have one you can see at PAX, but we’ll talk more about gaming on it really soon here on the blog.

As for PAX – if you’ve got tickets and you’re already there, I’m jealous.

Head over to the NVIDIA booth #1614, look for Jordan Dodge and give him a high-five from me.

(And stick around the booth, I hear that they have a bunch of great deals and giveaways going down during the show. MORE DETAILS HERE.)
