[UPDATE (2/28/11) Now, loaded with video goodness to walk you through what the mouse is all about.]
One thing I hate (and I’m sure you feel my pain) is when there are a bunch of USB devices floating around my laptop, each one waiting for an open port. Between the mouse, external keyboard, optical drive AND a VPN dongle there are simply no vacancies.
It’s not like I can do without some of this stuff, either – a good mouse makes all the difference after spending hours building PowerPoint presentations. But it’d be great to eliminate a dongle or two so that I don’t have to make some hard choices between yanking the keyboard so I can transfer files over. Or removing VPN access to plug in my phone. You get the idea.
Thankfully, a little birdie here at HP told me about a new mouse
they’re rolling out in the spring that uses Wi-Fi to connect to the PC. Read:
NO DONGLE NECESSARY!
Aside from freeing up a USB port, a Wi-Fi mouse is pretty legit for a few other reasons. The battery life of the mouse is extended significantly -- up to twice as long as say, a Bluetooth mouse. My little birdie tells me the HP Wi-Fi mouse will allow you to use it up to 30 feet from your PC and that it works on most surfaces, without interference from other wireless devices. I’m thinking this is going to come in handy when I’m watching movies on my desktop PC and I’m too lazy to get out of bed to press play, rewind or fast forward. It also has programmable buttons to create shortcuts for your most common tasks. And it reconnects instantly when rebooting your computer, so there is no need to wait that little lag time when signing on in the morning.
Is it strange that I’m actually pretty jazzed
about this? (It’s the little things, ya know?) I’ll have to see whose cage I
can rattle to get an early sample.
So, check back here for another update!!
