HP’s Slate Device Delivers a Holistic Mobile Experience

by Phil on 04-05-2010 08:59 AM - last edited on 08-17-2010 11:02 AM by ShayFan

Up to now, we’ve given you only tiny glimpses of the HP slate device coming out later this year. You saw it first in a video we released during CES and most recently in videos demoing its Web experience and Adobe Flash and Air support. We’ve also blogged about the evolution of the slate category and our history in the space.

So far, almost everything we’ve shared showcases how you’ll consume media with the device. And by media we mean all types of digital content, whether it’s a story from a major news outlet or videos and photos you’ve shot. But we also believe that media consumption is only half of the ideal mobile experience.

Think about the last time you chatted with friends over Skype on your notebook. Or uploaded a picture from your mobile phone to Facebook or Flickr. How about the last time you viewed images or video from an SD card or a USB device. We know that you expect to be able to capture and share digital content on your mobile devices. And the HP slate device excels there.

Take a look at our newest video. As you’ll see, we’re putting a lot of thought into the design to make sure we deliver an optimal mobile experience.

What did you spot in the video – and what are you looking forward to seeing next? Go on Twitter, YouTube, and our forums and tell us. In the mean time, sign up for updates on hp.com/slate.

And no post would be complete without a word from our friends at the FCC: this device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.

Hi Phil,

I don’t usually comment on blogs, but given the rumors about the cancelation of the Slate or at least the use of some other OS on it drove me to.

It seems to me you guys are trying to marketing the Slate as a media consumption device and in that sense, maybe it would not be ideal to use a fully fledged Windows 7 install. But to most people who are aware of it and intend to buy it, the Slate is seen as a tool, not a toy… a computer without a keyboard.

In my case specifically, I want something I can use to check email with all the features I like/need (Outlook), I want to be able to edit work documents properly, something to quickly view Excel spreadsheets with pivot tables and db links, something I can have video conferences with work mates and family (Office Communicator) and so on and on. What I need is a very light (real) computer that I can use while standing still, walking, in a meeting, airplane, sofa, etc… both for work and personal purposes. A media consumption device, yes… but not as its primary function.

The Slate as it is, is not an iPad competitor because the iPad cannot do any of those things. Nor does WebOS, Android, or any other OS for that matter and they never will.

HP invested a lot of money on Palm, but as far as I can see, there is a big market out there for the Slate in its originally conceived form. Corporate types such as myself will definitely welcome and embrace something like this even if it is more expansive than the rumored price and if the perceived speed is not the same as with a mobile OS, but it HAS to be actually useful by running standard software.

Anyway, that’s just a thought but my money is waiting for the HP Slate, but only if it comes with Windows 7 (Windows 7 Embedded could be a nice alternative).

One would hope that with the acquisition of Palm that HP would not abandon a Windows 7 platform for it's new slate product. In the online previews, the specifications look good and the slate will be very versatile for windows users who would like the form function of the slate. After converting to HP/Windows products for the bulk of my personal and business hardware needs, I have found them to meet my expectations for many years now. Windows 7 seems to be a very good platform and we just installed our first HP Unit in a POS Station and it was a dream to set up with all the associated hardware.

Come on HP.... Lets get a good Windows 7 Slate product like the one we have been seeing sneek previews of out the door by June, otherwise, I am sure many of us will make the switch to Apple.

I want this device. This seems like a good compromise between a limited e-reader, an iPad with severe limitations on the internet, and a netbook. If it comes out before a mainstream android tablet is out, I will buy it. I also see this a a great business tool for field activities. Why is it taking so long to release? How about a model that dual boots Win7 and Android or WebOS!

You really need to give the people you want to buy your product some sort of date or we may purchase a ipad rather then wait for an unknown.

can a dreamscreen accept an ip address, i.e., 162.198.1.6:9000 with the port number.  i want to use it as a stationary device, wireless connection to home network, and access slimserver using the web interface  address above.  Any one know?

thank you

I would think by now there should be more information on this product, it has been over a month since information came out last and it was pretty much the same information HP started with in January is this product coming out or has HP tossed the idea aside waving the white flag.

If it is to be released in June in the United States consumers who are interested in the product would need more consistent updates to keep their interest. Our group is getting a bit discouraged as HP is not pursuing the interest of their customers or their new product as aggressively as they should be with all the new similar products already released. I can not imagine that HP can not see that many of their customers have already purchased the apple ipad because rumor has been going around that HP is not going to get the HP Slate out as previously stated.

I don't really see the HP Slate as a media device like I do the iPad because of Apple's history with the iPod touch (also called the iPad mini). I believe that the reason we're all excited for the HP Slate is because it is different, and not some big media player, more of a tiny Person Computer that does everything you'd expect.... WE LOVE WINDOWS.... (mac sucks)

I'm looking into a small tablet that can be a display device for me, but I wanted something that would output a 2nd display.  Well, they have wireless display adapters that work thru a USB port, so your tablet can stay truly cordless during a presentation (up to 30 feet).  Now I'm stoked!  When will it be release?

I live in O'Fallon, Mo (close to St. Louis, Mo) and would like to purchase an HP Slate.  Where do I go to purchase the HP Slate?  Thank you!
