HP’s Slate Device Delivers a Holistic Mobile Experience

by Phil on 04-05-2010 08:59 AM - last edited on 08-17-2010 11:02 AM by ShayFan

Up to now, we’ve given you only tiny glimpses of the HP slate device coming out later this year. You saw it first in a video we released during CES and most recently in videos demoing its Web experience and Adobe Flash and Air support. We’ve also blogged about the evolution of the slate category and our history in the space.

So far, almost everything we’ve shared showcases how you’ll consume media with the device. And by media we mean all types of digital content, whether it’s a story from a major news outlet or videos and photos you’ve shot. But we also believe that media consumption is only half of the ideal mobile experience.

Think about the last time you chatted with friends over Skype on your notebook. Or uploaded a picture from your mobile phone to Facebook or Flickr. How about the last time you viewed images or video from an SD card or a USB device. We know that you expect to be able to capture and share digital content on your mobile devices. And the HP slate device excels there.

Take a look at our newest video. As you’ll see, we’re putting a lot of thought into the design to make sure we deliver an optimal mobile experience.

What did you spot in the video – and what are you looking forward to seeing next? Go on Twitter, YouTube, and our forums and tell us. In the mean time, sign up for updates on hp.com/slate.

And no post would be complete without a word from our friends at the FCC: this device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.

I will start with the fact that I am a Mac fan!  I am posting this from my Mac.  I love apples products, but was soooo disappointed with the iPad.  I love my iphone, but after careful consideration of what I do and how I'd use a tablet, I have come to the conclusion that the iPad is a disappointment.  The iPhone is killer.  It does most of what I need it to do, because I have content that didn't come from app store.  I need and demand more.  Life is about erasing boundaries, and expansion and immersion into the world around us.  I demand a device that works in that manner, not against it.  I know that the iPad will have a camera in the future, but I need it now.  I know that I can get most video and photos content onto the iPad with the help of a computer, but I demand to be able to to this anywhere, and the SD slot give that to me. (iPad will never have this) I demand to connect other devices via a USB. iPad kinda has it with an external device.  I demand that I choose what runs on my tablet.  Apple, I know you are a great guardian and protector, but just who are you guarding and protecting except for your wallet?!  I demand open communication, not just what you want me to see and hear.  iPad you FAIL on this and always will, sorry, it's just in your genes!  I demand FLASH.  Yes, I know it is a resource hog.  Yes it is far from perfect, but that is the way the world is, and the world runs on flash.  I refuse to ignore this fact.  Yes, it hurts the iphone, but I can live with that until I get to a computer.  I refuse to compromise on this when I am using a pc replacement product.  iPad you FAIL on this and always will due to arrogance, and arrogance alone.  not a hardware limitation, just plain arrogance! I demand simplicity and speed.  Yes iPad to do deliver on these, but with such a long list of FAILS, how could I compromise.  It isn't that the iPad could not have done all this, it was a choice.  It was Mr.. Jobs choice.  Well, he made his choice, and now I will make mine!  I will wait to see what the slate brings.  I am hopeful!  But it won't tale much other than a well polished product to bring a huge win and my purchase from HP.  Go HP!

it would be great if:

1) it had switchable touchscreen/stylus input

2)the song in the commercial came preloaded on it. It's so cool :-) Please do not tell us to buy that on I-tunes :-(

3)the screen could be switched from regular to ebook reader (e-ink style). I spend many hours per day reading ebooks and this is a deal breaker for me. This would eat up kindle and ipad in one big gulp.

4) it were available near end of June when I visit the US so I can buy it there and showoff with it when I go back to Europe to the envy of my ipadded friends ;-)

Pressure sensitive stylus imput would make this (coupled with software like ArtRage Studio Pro) an illustrator's/painter's dream come true. It would be a mobile cintiq you can take out and do sketches from live etc. Think of art schools... I would be raedy to pay $1000+ if this came with pressure sensitivity.

I hope that it will have 802.11 n.  I know that they can make net books go for 8 hr so the should be able to make the slate go for at least that long.

I can't wait for this to come out on the market so I can decide to buy one so far it looks to be better then other slate type devises out, my only concern is the ram speed will it be available with more then 1gig of ram some times only have one gig of ram is slow on these devices like the mini pc , if it came out with a version with 2gigs of ram it would be really user friendly.

I am a lifelong Apple user.  I have lived and breathed Apple for decades.

But, I am also a Flash developer, so Apple's move to kill Flash is inexcusable.

And, I am an artist and need a tablet with good resolution to draw on with a stylus -- yet another way the iPad fails!

It is incredible there is still no decent affordable portable sketching tablet in this day and age.  I am sick of Wacom tablets, having to draw every line 2-3 times before I can get it right, because there is no touch screen.

So, I am ready to spend big bucks $$$ to anyone who can make a touchscreen tablet/slate/gadget (as long as it is not a phone), whatever it takes -- I don't care if it is a hassle and requires geeky workarounds to sync it with my Mac -- I would rather spend $1000 on a Flash-capable, stylus-suitable art slate from anybody than spend $500 on the useless iPad.

The HP Slate looks great.  What I really need is for it to be available.  When can I buy it and how much will it cost me?  One of the (non-HP) YouTube videos had text that said Q4 2010.  Will I really have to wait that long?  It appears to simply be an assemblage of existing hardware and software and HP claims to have been working on it for quite some time.  So what is the hold up?

by ish(anon) on 04-14-2010 07:47 AM

can u please just hurry up and release this already. i need a device to watch hulu on. and play that on my tv. slate sounds perfect for that. my old dv5000 can do the typing i just need slacker.com and hulu to make me happy. also dont screw up the touch screen feel. i have an iphone so an ipad is out of the question(why have two of the same thing) but it also gives me high standards when it comes to touch screen feel. i think hp will do great with this product just dont wait forever to bring it out.

by Timothy(anon) on 04-14-2010 07:58 AM

does it have multitasking?

by cariFreak(anon) on 04-14-2010 03:54 PM

heard it's has just 5hrs battery life. This is just too short for a device like this, was hoping for at least 8hrs. Other specs good, especially the sd card slot and usb slot!

I'm happy that I held of on the purchase of iPad, I know my accountant won't justify a "large iPhone/iTouch copy purchase", this is a more justifiable business expense with a much more promise of meeting the needs of a different aspect of portable computing. Can't wait, time to let the money that was for the iPad stay in the bank and season a bit more longer. Well, done HP. Keep up the good work, make the iPad pay for it's shortcomings on it's $$ hungry ploy to maintain having their users to keep upgrading till all the amenities are included, way to have it there to what will seems to be included on launch day!

by Chris Breazy(anon) on 04-19-2010 09:12 PM

To bad it does'nt have speakers:smileysad: The ipad has em

by Floressa(anon) on 04-21-2010 01:39 PM

I'd like to know if it will be powerful enough to play games on it and if there is a removable battery. Also if there will be a notepad and stylis set up for note taking or drawing.

Our church is affiliting withthe Wounded Warrior project. I envision finding corporate sponsors who would act as mentors for these fine young people wh have given so much to their country. With the new free education websites and the counseling available through the Wounded Warrior projects, I can see each of these youngsters increasing their education and honing their talents through the use of a Slate.

Do  you agree? L.K.Weber, CDR USN (Ret.)

how far will this go?

by Joe Acerbic(anon) on 04-28-2010 04:51 PM

Now that HP is buying Palm, Apple fanbois are salivating at the rumors of HP canceling the Win 7 slate and starting over with WebOS, resulting in a delivery of another crapgadget jumbo mp3 player years from now instead of a usable computer in a few months. HP, please don't be that stupid and please make your plans clear and public so that people like me will know if there's anything to wait for or should we just go and buy some clunky laptop. I would choose a slate computer with a 5 hour battery life over an ipod that lasts 5 years any time, because I NEED A COMPUTER, NOT A STUPID IPOD!

by Alex Igu(anon) on 04-29-2010 08:55 PM

Please, please, please give clarity on release timeliness and especially clarify the rumors about scratching Windows 7 plans in Slate.

I do see the arguments about iphone OS or WebOs simplicity when it comes to tablets for some people, though there is also going to be a dedicated market to W7 as well.  I own an iPod touch and really think that the user interface is slick, but I personally am still looking forward to HP Slate just because it's W7 based! I am a Windows Media Center user as my main DVR and can't wait to have a tablet that I can access all my media library including recorded shows without having to convert files and synch stuff through USB cable. I have a windows home server and it will be cool to have my slate auto backed up. Granted, I am invested in the Microsoft platform more than many others, but my plans of how to use HP Slate is just one many reasons people are excited about a W7 based slate.

Despite continuing to be one of the most vocal supporters of HP Slate and originally thinking that HP was acting very smart being a fast follower, even I am getting tired of waiting with no clarity. I hope you guys provide a new update with some more clarity soon (maybe after the iPad 3g release tomorrow?) or even I might cave in and start looking for alternatives. I personally am waiting till June suggested in earlier rumors.

As someone that really wants to see HP Slate succeed here:

- Is the lack of internal speakers real? In the spec sheet it was omitted, but at the same time not noted as an advantage to Ipad. It will be a huge advantage to iPad. I did not buy my iPod Touch until they added speakers. Don't want to carry an ear piece with me all the time.

- Make sure default W7 installation is tweaked for ease of folks. Some of the complaints I heard about W7 slate simply don't make sense.

a) W7 boot times --> Just default the power button to standby;

b) Need to enter login info --> In my HTPC I set it to auto login, people that want more security can always add another account;

c) Non-touch ready programs might cause hangups with no other way to resolve vs. reboot --> This actually did happen to me as well on an HP touch smart while testing it out and had to use the keyboard to get unstuck.  This might not be as easy as the other 2, but has to be solvable. Worst case, will there be a way to kill the program? If there was a home button similar to iPod Touch, I could see that as a solution. Even if there is no physical button could a custom gesture force closure on a program?

- Have an easy way to synch music/videos to the more limited storage. I could use SD card to do it myself & realized I don't even do it as much in iPod Touch, but given limited storage, it's important to have a good default option.

That's all from me. Please make me happy. :smileyhappy:

by Howard Abraham(anon) on 04-30-2010 12:43 PM

I heard HP is killing the Slate.  If it is true I respect your decision.  I have an HP Pavilion laptop, MediaSmart, and TouchSmart.  I love my HP products and recommend them to everyone.  I know if you kill the product line it is because it doesn't meet your high standards.  However, please don't give up on the tablet.  I want a tablet and I want it to be from HP.  I don't care if it has WebOS, Android, Win Phone 7, or Win7 on it.  Just make it good.  Apple was first.  They set the bar.  Make it better than the iPad.  I know you can do it.

by ksmo92(anon) on 04-30-2010 04:38 PM

Please do not cancel the Slate, i want something cool to carry around for colleges, i would like to use one note, I know it might run slow, but im only going to run at most 2 programs at a time just because i know how much an atom can handel, it will be skype and one note, or Chrome and one note. Just Give me a pen so i can write on it. I don't want to go to pegatron to get what you can give me because you are handing out a program over Win 7 to make it more touch friendly. Please keep up the good work and give us something that will blow away the Ipad, at most give us a choice in what OS we want.
