There are quick lessons, long courses and quizzes to make sure that you’ve mastered the material.
Oh, and the cost of tuition: Absolutely nothing. All you need to do is create an account and enroll in whichever class you like at hp.com/go/learningcenter. I’m going to provide you with quick lessons and if you want to learn even more, you’re just a click away.
Today’s Class: “Speed up your Internet (and Network) Connection in Windows 7”
Actually, before we jump fully into this lesson, it gets a little technical. Honestly, this isn’t something that I normally would deal with – it’s my hubby’s fault, really. He is an IT guy and fixes everything for me so I never learn how to do things myself! It’s wonderful but not good at the same time if you know what I mean. Well, if you don’t have my husband on-call, read on. This transcript’s from a video. Go on and read the tips below or go to the HP Learning Center and enroll for this video class.
Soon, you will learn how to speed up your network and internet connections. This lesson focuses on Microsoft Windows 7 Professional and the Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 web browser.
You will first learn general methods of increasing the speed of your connections. Then you'll see how to edit your Windows 7 registry to make web pages and images load faster in Internet Explorer 8, improving your internet experience.
Note: The registry edit works well for broadband and similar internet connections, not dial-up connections.
There are several general ways to increase the speed of network and internet connections. [And yes, a couple are fairly obvious - Ann]
If these steps still don’t get you the results you need, it’s time to try something else. Let's explore how to edit two Windows 7 registry keys that will help speed up your internet connection. This method increases the number of files Internet Explorer 8 can download from a web server at one time. The default is 6. By increasing that number to 10, or as high as 15, you can get better response time when browsing web pages with many images.
Let's start in the Registry Editor. Enter regedit in the Start menu Search box, then select regedit from the results list.
If the User Access Control dialog box appears, click Yes.
Expand the registry tree in the left pane to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE, SOFTWARE, Microsoft, Internet Explorer, MAIN, Feature Control. Click the FEATURE underscore MAX CONNECTIONS PER 1 underscore 0 SERVER key.
Right-click a blank space in the right pane, then select New DWORD 32-bit Value from the shortcut menu.
Type iexplore dot exe as the new DWORD key name.
Right-click the iexplore.exe entry, and then select Modify from the shortcut menu.
In the Edit DWORD 32-bit Value dialog box, select the Decimal option. Then enter 10 in the Value data text box. Click OK to save your changes.
Now, apply the same steps to the FEATURE underscore MAX CONNECTIONS PER SERVER entry, which is just below the MAX CONNECTIONS PER one underscore 0 SERVER entry in the registry. Let's watch how this is accomplished.
When you're finished, close the Registry Editor to save your changes.
Log off of Windows 7. The next time you log on, the registry edit will go into effect.
This demonstration showed you how to edit the Windows 7 registry to speed up your internet connection. After applying this change, you should notice that graphics-rich web pages load faster and your computer's online browsing response time is improved.
Well, I warned you that this gets a little technical…..what did you think? Did you find these tips helpful? (Again, you can watch along on-screen in the video lesson here.)
