Sebastian Copeland is an environmental leader and an award-winning photographer. I’ve not had the pleasure of meeting him yet, but anyone who dedicates their life to protecting the environment and raising awareness about climate change and its potential effects on the earth is pretty interesting to me.
Copeland’s latest project was the exploration of Greenland. Along with Arctic guide Eric McNair-Landry, they traversed 2300 kilometers using kites and skis, for 45 days in sub-20 degree weather. Can you imagine? Their journey began in early May and concluded over this past weekend, and they blogged about it all along the way. I should mention that from Narsaq to Qaanaaq they kite skied 595km in 24 hours, giving them the new kite ski distance world record. Their trip is a fascinating read.
HP helped Copeland and McNair-Landry stay connected to the world while they were on their expedition, by contributing some thin and light mobile products including the HP iPAQ Glisten smartphone and the HP Mini 110 netbook. Copeland said, “I used HP technology for both my mini laptop and iPAQs/Smart phones. The mini was invaluable and survived extraordinarily harsh conditions, especially the blender-like shake of moving over sustruge at high speeds; it performed flawlessly. I would not know how to communicate blogs or transmit photos without the iPAQ which is the golden standard in the expedition blogosphere.”
I must take pause here to say that I’m very proud to be working for a company that makes products that can withstand an adventure like this one!
In the above video, McNair-Landry says that if all of the ice in Greenland were to melt into the ocean, it could raise the water level by 7 meters. That’s almost 23 feet! How might the loss of all that ice impact the earth? I can hardly begin to speculate, but at HP we most definitely share Sebastian Copeland’s belief that through greater awareness of our global environment, individuals can be inspired to re-think how they live their lives in a more sustainable, environmentally responsible way.
Are you doing anything unique to be environmentally responsible? Please let us know! We’d love to hear about it in the comments section below.
