Paper Deer Mount

How to make a paper deer mount

I am a collector of many things, but one of my favorite collections includes several faux deer head mounts that adorn my craft studio. Most are vintage chalkware, ceramic or plastic souvenir wall decor that I have painted flat white to simulate alabaster sculptures. Inspired by the decorative accents I’m so fond of, I designed a simple-to-create dimensional paper deer mount for you to use in your paper craft projects.

This project was designed to make with a sharp craft knife or paper scissors, or both- whichever you prefer and are most comfortable using. The files are free to download and include pieces for the deer head & neck, antlers, and several colored mounting boards and ribbon-banners to choose from. I’ve also included a printable of a beautiful vintage mortise illustration in four different colors to use as an optional background for your deer mount.

To get started, gather the following supplies:

 Step 1

Download the deer mount printable(s) found at the bottom of the page and print them on your HP Premium Inkjet Matte Presentation Paper.

Step 2

Trim out head, antlers, mounting board and ribbon-banner pieces using scissors or a craft knife.

Step 3

Once you’re done cutting out the pieces, handwrite text on the banner and fold it along the faint fold lines indicated as shown in the image above.

Step 4

Take your cut out pieces. Now it’s time to put it all together! Fold the head of the deer down onto the neck section. Tuck the center of the antlers in under the head, pulling them up to the top of the fold. Glue in rounded center piece of the antlers in place onto the neck section to secure.

Step 5

Glue down the nose area of the head to the neck section keeping a bit of bend in the paper rather than gluing it down flat.

Step 6

Glue the back of the deer neck area to the mounting board.

Step 7

If using one of the provided background illustrations, place the deer mount in place and write in the blank section of the background piece. Glue the deer mounting board in place above that section.

Step 8

Glue the outer folded ends of the banner-ribbon in place with a slight upward bend in the center of the piece. Glue under the small side folds if necessary. If you’re not using a background paper, glue the ribbon-banner to the mounting board.

Step 10

If using a background paper, glue down the tips of antlers pressing inward towards the head to create slight outward bends in the paper for added dimension.

TIP #1:  You can use the tip of your craft knife or the back end of a pencil or pen to hold down the tips of the antlers.
