Dimensional Tree

How to create a 3-Dimensional Tree

I love tree décor, especially during the holiday season. And they don’t need to be Christmas themed – in fact, winter trees are nice because they fit the holiday, but you can keep them up past December! I love this dimensional winter tree decoration, because it’s simple to create, plus you can make it as fun or as sophisticated as you like. It’s all about the paint colors and photos that you choose. Here’s how to make it!

Gather These Supplies:

Step 1

Measure the wood pieces to fit your canvas. I cut the following lengths: 8”, 6”, 4”, and two 2” wood pieces. You can trim wood pieces to any size you want to fit your canvas, so it just depends on how big your canvas is.

TIP #1: If you don’t own a miter box and saw, home improvement stores will cut the wood for you in store!

Step 2

Use your saw to cut the wood.

Step 3

Once your pieces are cut, paint the wood pieces with the white paint until fully covered. You only need to paint one side and the edges – you can leave the backs bare wood. Wait for 1 hr for the paint to dry.

At the same time, you’ll want to paint your canvas. I spray painted mine with silver spray paint.

Step 4

Now print out the image of your choice. You can use Snapfish’s themed pages to decorate. I recommend the Paper Chain Banner PDF in the Holiday Printables section to use on the top of the box.

Step 5

Plan your design and cut the paper. You don’t need to trim it exactly to the wood yet. Make sure you leave one of the 2” wood pieces blank – that is your tree trunk.

Step 6

Apply Mod Podge to the top of the wood and smooth the paper down using your fingers. Let it dry for 15 – 20 minutes and then cut around the edges.

Step 7

Apply Mod Podge as a top coat to the paper and let dry.

Step 8

Lay the tree pieces out onto the canvas and then hot glue into place (you can also use craft glue, but it will take longer to dry).

Display on a table or on the wall – experiment with various paint colors on your canvas and images on your tree.

Do you love this canvas too? Would you use photographs instead of scrapbook paper for the tree? You could even trim one image into multiple pieces for an interesting look! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.
