HP Latex 1500 Printer owners interested in making their printers Fogra Reference Color Set compliant can follow the following process in order to get 93% color definition or above.
FOGRA Standard is an international color certificate that Graphics and Advertising Agencies use to have a print pattern where they question whether the colors in a job are correct. This goes from substrate white point to the ink drying step.
For instance: An agency that requested a PSP a print proof from a certain image is getting back the actual print but arguing it’s not as expected (not the right colors compared with the image in their workstations). PSP can reply to the agency to verify their Monitor calibrations (should be under FOGRA standard) since the print is actually compliant (verifying a VALIDATION TARGET that is within 93% of approval).
Maintenance up to date. The printer you wish to make compliant should be up-to-date in its maintenance plan.
Image Quality. The printer should be performing with optimal image quality:
New printheads should be installed on it (or the existing printheads should be less than 10% used) in order to maximize image quality and color output during the process. Run a check and clean them before starting.
The printheads should be aligned.
Media should be advancing well: either the OMAS should be working or the media advance mechanism manually calibrated (if the OMAS is deactivated).
The printer should be color calibrated (it is actually recommended to start with creating a new media preset and running a new color calibration on it, as we do here, with a new set of printheads).
The following media should be loaded: White glossy self-adhesive vinyl that is as neutral as possible (L*: 95, a*: 0, b*: -2).
You should have a reflective spectrophotometer (such as an XRite i1) on hand.
You should have an ICC color profiler (the actual XRite i1 software can be used or you could have an internal RIP process).
The RIP that we used in our tests was Caldera Grand RIP+ v10.
Create the new media preset:
Print a reference patch on the specified media.
Run a color calibration with it.
Print the color reference plot. Measure it and compare it to the values in the table.
If necessary, adjust the number of passes/the color density and repeat.
Synch the new preset with your RIP.
Profile and check the target printout’s value for compliance:
Print the target.
Read and measure it.
Analyze and visualize.
Check the Fogra39L value.
If necessary, adjust and repeat.
The process in detail
Create the new media preset
Load the specified media in your HP Latex 1500.
Create a new media preset following the usual internal printer process:
Select 8 passes at 80 ºC (the default settings).
Print a curing reference plot, selecting at least 120% ink (try to configure all the parameters so that the patches meet the desired ink density and amount of optimizer when they are completely dried and cured).
Name the new media preset.
Run a color calibration.
Print a color reference plot with four full color patches:
100%, M: 100%, Y: 100% and K: 100%.
Measure the values for each patch and compare them to the following reference values:
The closer to these values you can get, the better your new preset will serve you to obtain the desired result. If necessary, increase the number of passes and the ink density as well.
Sync the new preset with your RIP

4. Open the “Easy Media” tool.
5. Select your printer and let them synchronize in order for your RIP to be updated with the parameters of this new media preset you have created.
6. In the ICC profiling section, select “ECI 2002 1780 patches” as your profiling target.
7. Send it to print.
Profile and check the target printout’s value for compliance
8. Read and measure all of your reference patches.
It is recommended not to use a ruler guide with the i1…rather, take a direct reading (this is considered the best way to do it, as no external light enters the lens, which will give you the best possible result).
9. Once your measurements are finished, click “Finish process”
10.Go to “Color Analysis” and visualize the results. The Fogra39L value should be 93% gamut or above.
If it is not at 93%, repeat the process from the beginning, re-adjusting the parameters, such as the media itself (a glossier or more neutral media should be considered), the color saturation, the amount of optimizer used, etcetera).
