I’m frequently asked my opinion about where technology is heading and the challenges we might see as our lives become more and more connected. It’s one thing to make a simple prediction about a gadget; quite another to take a holistic view on how technology is going to change in a decade and the effects that will have on individuals, businesses, and society. But that is the kind of challenge I like as a CTO. So last week, I accepted the challenge and presented my view of the connected life in the next ten years (you can see the presentation on my blog here).
To give you some context of where we are going, let’s look back to where we were in 2001. Wikipedia was launched, the dot.com crash was in full swing (with one failing every 24 hours), and the Xbox launched. In terms of a connected life back then, cell phones still didn’t have cameras on them in 2001, “friend” was not used as a verb until 2004, YouTube didn’t give everyone 15 minutes of fame until 2005 and only birds “tweeted” until 2006.
That’s a pretty big decade of leaps towards a connected life.
