HP's Demo Day: The Pavilion dm3

dm3 Recently, HP took over some swanky hotel in San Francisco. The reason: Give the gathered press hands-on time with some of the new notebooks and some sweet devices that'll be available in the coming months. Now I am a huge fan of notebooks that travel light, while still packing horsepower. In the past, I've enjoyed using the Pavilion dv2 -- in fact, it's still my go-to travel machine. But these days, the new HP Pavilion dm3 could hit that sweet spot. Thank the Core i5 processor and 7200 rpm hard drive inside the machine. Read on to learn more about the laptop -- and see videos showing off the dm3 in action.

HP's Not-So-Mini Netbook Changes

Mini 210 When I walked into the demo suite, I was told that in the corner sat a line of new HP Mini 210s. What they failed to tell me is how they re-engineered the line so that it's easier for nerds like me to tinker under the hood. Oh, sure, the people on hand were quick to talk about the starting price ($329) and the fact that with the standard 6-cell battery, it'll run for 10.75 hours. Plus learn about the new Atom dual-core processor and how it'll give these netbooks -- and the newest business-ready Mini 5103 -- an extra kick.

HP's New 3D Envy, New Beats Edition

Envy 14 Beats A few months ago, I walked you through HP's Envy 14 and 17 -- and the improvements that came with them. You can find that story (and a couple handy YouTube video demos) right here. This time around, HP revealed a couple new machines including the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition and the HP Envy 17 3D -- a 17-inch Envy with…you guessed it…a 3D display. Let's start off by looking at what is in the new Envy 17 because, frankly, this is the only 17-inch laptop I know of that's offering a 1080p, 3D screen. OK, so, 3D -- kinda neat and more and more movies are using it.

PAX and PC Gaming

PAX I will be joining a few of my industry colleagues at PAX this year in Seattle on Saturday, September 4, 8:00PM at the Wolfman Theater for a panel titled “The Future of PC Gaming.” While many of you may not be PC gamers, the fact is PC gaming does drive much of the innovation in many parallel industries. This is a subject I’m pretty passionate about. I blogged recently about the impact of gaming on the technology industry and other people here on The Next Bench have shared similar thoughts. Mark your calendars if you live in the Seattle area. PAX is going to be huge this year - definitely better than E3.

TFTNB: The First DeskJet Printer

hpdeskjet HP sure has come a long way with cloud- and Web-ready printers (for more on that, look for this week's Smart Home Improvement installment all about ePrint technology that you'll find in printers like the new HP Photosmart e-All-in-One D110a). But it had to start somewhere. A few weeks ago, we talked about the first ThinkJet printer and this time, let’s look a little more into how modern printing went mainstream. The HP DeskJet was the first mass-market inkjet printer. Customers knew its predecessor, the HP ThinkJet, because HP had been first to market with the inkjet printer. The name “DeskJet” was introduced to draw a clear distinction from the preceding inkjet printers.
